Thinking Out Loud: Musings, mantras, and what I’m learning as I lead

The air had that thin edge this morning, the kind that wakes your face before the coffee does. I ran into Rick, who works at the coffee shop next door and regularly goes above and beyond to shovel the snow for the whole block.

Lately, we’ve had longer exchanges as I pass him on my morning walks. Today he smiled and said, “Looks like we’re on the wake-up list again!”

I just stood there for a beat, spellbound by how simple and heavy that sounded.

“What’s that?” I said, caught off guard.

“Not everyone makes it through the night. But we made it on the wake-up list.”

And then he grinned at me.

JFC. That’ll make you appreciate the morning.

There’s a lot I don’t control in life. Increasingly, it might feel like there’s less and less that we can count on.

But there is a small country I do get to govern: the few minutes after I notice a tiny window of gratitude.

Most days feel like boulders flying down a hill. Calendars slot us in. Notifications herd us along. It’s efficient, and it can be numbing.

Sometimes I move through all of it like a ghost in my own life, busy and barely touching anything. The motions keep happening; I’m not quite happening with them.

But isn’t life just the pursuit of normalizing and elevating moments of astonishment that we were on the “wake-up list”?

Now, it might not be authentic for you to go around telling people, “Hey, guess what, you didn’t die in your sleep” like Rick did, but there’s something there in that bit of drama for everyone.

It takes courage to acknowledge what’s right in front of you.

And let that be the life worth living.

On the Market: Strategic job search intel for high-intent candidates

If you’re someone who always needs to be doing…I see you. The job search can feel like a volume game. Apply. Interview. Network. Repeat. But at a certain point, more isn't the move. Depth is.

In last week’s Leap Lab, one of our most driven candidates asked a smart question:

“When should I stop applying and just focus on what’s already in motion?”

The answer? When you hit three to four active conversations across distinct stages, it’s time to rebalance.

At that point, your time becomes exponentially more valuable not in chasing new leads—but in closing existing ones.

When you have 3-4 active interviews in the pipeline, reallocate your time as follows:

  • Spend 60% on interview prep (don’t wing it—win it)

  • Spend 20% on high-interest roles

  • Spend 20% on networking

Why this works: The deeper your prep, the stronger your signal. Showing up with crisp stories, strategic thinking, and tailored responses turns you from “a qualified candidate” into “a category of one.”

If you’re in motion: honor it. Build toward mastery, not burnout. If you’re early in the cycle: front-load the prep now so when momentum hits, you’re ready to sprint.

Sometimes the most strategic move isn’t to do more. It’s to do smarter.
